The Mexican government gave Don Ygnacio Martinez a 17,000 acre land grant in the 1824. The area was named after him.

Martinez was a shipping boomtown and a popular gold rush stop throughout the late 1800’s. The popular cocktail Martini was actually created by one of the area’s first settlers. It isn’t possible for an area of this size to be devoid of traffic accidents. In 2015 alone there have been several devastating car wrecks. A woman from Pittsburgh was killed in August as she walked along Highway 4 in Antioch. A car struck the 50 year old victim east of A street at 12:40 a.m.

A tragic accident in July occurred when an elderly woman pushed the gas pedal instead of the brake and killed her husband. CHP investigators reported 84 year old Yvonne Cottrell accidentally ran over and pinned her 89 year old husband under her car.

A 28 year old man was arrested in August after crashing his car and killing three of his passengers in Contra County. Justin Gardner was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence. He was speeding and veered off the road for unknown reasons.

Whether drugs and alcohol are involved or simple mistakes are made, car accidents are always devastating. Time from work and income is often missed and the status of life is seriously undermined. If injury or death is involved the costs of the accident are astronomical. No one can recover without proper compensation.
