Wrong Way Crash in Brentwood on Highway 4 Injures Several — July 16, 2017

Eight people were hurt during a head-on collision caused by a wrong-way driver in Brentwood on Highway 4 Saturday. The accident occurred just before 8 p.m. when a stolen Honda Accord travelling west on Highway 4 near Lone Tree Way was going east in the westbound lanes. The driver passed several vehicles before smashing head-on into a Honda Odyssey van containing 7 people near Sand Creek Road. The wrong-way driver has been identified as Rafael Duarte, 24-years-old, of Oakley. He had minor injuries and was taken to an area hospital for treatment. Upon release from the hospital, he was arrested on suspicion of felony DUI, possession of and driving a stolen vehicle, driving without car insurance, and driving the wrong way on the highway causing injury and booked into the Martinez Detention Facility. All seven occupants of the van had minor injuries and were treated at an area hospital.
