Two Killed in Seven Vehicle Pile-up — Sep 9, 2017

A Friday night crash involving seven people ended with two deaths on I80 in Sacramento County. Three others were transported to area hospitals with varying degrees of injury. One of the victims has been identified as Bennie Harriel, 62, of Sacramento. No name has been released for the second victim. The accident occurred at approximately 9 p.m. on I80 westbound near Madison Avenue. A Hyundai Sonata stopped with no lights in the middle of the highway. A tow truck towing a car down the highway hit the Sonata. Harriel was the driver of the Sonata. He was killed along with another man. A third car driving in the carpool lane then struck the other two vehicles. A fourth vehicle, a pick-up truck, pulled over to help. Once the driver exited the vehicle, it was struck by another car. A Dodge Caravan hit the truck and burst into flames. The driver suffered major injuries. A sixth vehicle also hit the pickup truck. A seventh vehicle was hit with wreckage from the crashes. The left three lanes westbound lanes of I-80 were closed for four hours while investigations of the crash took place. It is still unknown if alcohol or drugs were an issue in the crash.
