One Death, One Injury after Fiery I880 Crash in San Leandro -- Dec 4, 2017

One individual was killed, and another was seriously harmed when an automobile crashed and caught fire on Interstate 880 in San Leandro early on Sunday, according to the California Highway Patrol. The solo-vehicle accident happened shortly before 3 a.m. along I-880 southbound, just north of the Davis Street exit, according to Ted Montez with the California Highway Patrol. A witness told police officers that the car passed at a high rate of speed and later lost control, swerved across traffic lanes, slammed into a guard rail, and hit a pole before catching fire, a CHP representative said. Police said the engine was ripped from the vehicle. The victims were two males. Their ages were not immediately known. It is not clear if alcohol played a role in the wreck, authorities said. An investigation is ongoing.
