A traffic collision in Hawthorne left one man dead and a minivan completely wrapped around a pole Thursday morning.

The collision occurred about 10 a.m. at 135th Street and Hawthorne Boulevard, Los Angeles County Fire Department Inspector Chris Reade said.

An individual in the vehicle was trapped and declared dead when first responders arrived, Reade said. The vehicle had been going eastbound when it hit a pole, which was left upright but embedded more than halfway into the vehicle.

The intersection was shut down as authorities worked around the wreckage of the Toyota Sienna minivan.

Speed was believed to be a factor in the crash, Hawthorne Police Department Officer Wilbert Pereira said.
