Five Dead in Mendota After SUV Collides with Big Rig — Sep 5, 2017

Five people died after crashing their Mercedes SUV into a big rig truck Tuesday morning. The accident occurred at approximately 9 a.m. south of Mendota at the Manning Avenue and Highway 33 intersection. The truck driver was Wayne Fletcher, 58-years-old. He received major injuries and was airlifted to a hospital. The 63-year-old driver of the 2009 Mercedes SUV ran the stop sign at Manning Avenue approaching Highway 33 causing the accident when he collided with the truck driven by Fletcher. He is from Hayward. The big rig, a 2013 Peterbilt, was hauling gravel in double trailers which flipped during the accident and landed on the SUV. The Mercedes caught fire. All five of the occupants died. Some burned inside the car. Others were found outside the car, also badly burned.
