Fiery DUI Crash in Merced Kills One, Injures Two — Jun 27, 2017

Two men suffered major injury and another died after a fiery car crash outside Delhi. A drunk driver driving on the wrong side of the road on Highway 99 rammed two cars before he flipped his own and it caught fire. Tuesday morning Merced County coroners identified the victim as 31-year-old Delhi resident, Jimmy Guerrero. He was the passenger in a Toyota Camry 2006 model. The driver was 35-year-old Evan Garcia, also a Delhi resident. Garcia admitted to being under the influence of alcohol. It was approximately 11:30 p.m. when he was seen driving on the wrong side of the highway by two California Highway Patrol officers. He drove several miles before hitting Kou Xiong, a 30-year-old Winton resident, in his 2017 Toyota Corolla. Xiong’s car overturned with him in it causing major internal injury. Garcia’s car went on to hit a second car driven by 33-year-old Livingston resident, Guillermo Benitez. He suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene. Garcia’s car flipped over after the second collision and caught fire. He tried to rescue his passenger but the flames were too high. He will face felony charges when released from the hospital after treatment of his serious internal injury.
