Driver Dies, Child Rescued in Riverbank Car Crash — July 1, 2017

Passersby rescued a 9-year-old boy from a fiery car crash on Highway 108 in Riverbank. The driver of the 1999 Dodge Intrepid died at the scene. It had been traveling east on Highway 108 when it went off the road and hit a tree near Mesa Drive. He was wearing a seatbelt in the rear right seat. A witness who had a fire extinguisher in the car was able to put out the flames. Others helped the boy out of the car. He did not sustain any injury. The driver was a 50-year-old man from Oakdale. He died from the impact of the crash. The solo vehicle wreck also damaged utility wires at the corner of Highway 108 and Mesa Drive. A crew from Pacific Gas & Electric arrived on scene to repair it. Eastbound traffic on Highway 108 closed between Claus Road and Mesa Drive as the California Highway Patrol investigated the scene.
