Deadly Chico Crash Kills One- August 8, 2016

The Butte County Coroner has released the name of the victim in the deadly Chico accident that occurred on Friday, August 5th. Alan Meigs, 72 years old, proprietor of Iron Mountain Leather in Chico’s downtown area and a popular local musician, died while driving his 1974 Dodge van. He was struck head-on at mile marker 30 in the Forest Ranch vicinity.

A memorial has been set up outside Meig’s leather shop for friends and mourners to gather and grieve. The accident happened at approximately 4:30 in the afternoon as Meigs was travelling east on Highway 32. The pick-up truck that hit him was driven by 25-year-old Jordan Smead, l of Chico. Smead allegedly deviated into oncoming traffic and hit Meigs. While investigators do not suspect drugs or alcohol as a factor, the accident is still under investigation. Smead did suffer moderate injuries in the collision. There was also a two passengers in the truck, Janessa Morales, 21, also of Chico, suffered major injuries but Javier Ramirez, a 27 year old San Jose resident, sought out privately obtained medical help.
