Accident on 605 Freeway Kills Sheriff’s Deputy — August 7, 2017

An off-duty Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy, Michael Leonard Haak, 52, of Fullerton, stopped his car in the emergency lane of San Gabriel Freeway 05 on Saturday and was struck and killed by a passing car. He had been with the police department since the fall of 1988. He was honored for his service in 2015. He had experienced mechanical problems with his car and pulled over to investigate. He stepped into a lane of traffic on the right of northbound 605 Freeway. It was between South Street and Artesia Boulevard at approximately 2:45 p.m. The man who hit him was a 54-year-old man from Buena Park. He stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Haak was rushed to the hospital but died of his injuries.
