A car traveling on the eastbound section of the highway near the Howe Avenue just after midnight on Wednesday crashed into the guardrail. The car eventually came to rest with the driver’s door facing traffic. A second car came along and was not able to stop in time and crashed into the wrecked car. The engine flew from the first car upon impact. It landed in the number 5 lane and was hit by another car. The driver of the first car was a 22-yer-old man from Carmichael. He was not wearing a seatbelt. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
