Patrolman, Peter Van Eckhardt, Rear-Ended on Interstate 580

A full closure of Interstate 580 was in order when a patrolman was rear-ended in July of 2015. CHP Officer Peter Van Eckhardt said he had finished up a previous accident scene and returned to his patrol car and began backing up when he was hit by another car. Lanes were closed so the air ambulance could land and transport the officer to an area hospital. He was conscious, but a severe head injury was visible.
